Marugame Udon, the world’s largest udon noodles and tempura restaurant chain that made its debut in London’s Liverpool Street in summer 2021, is looking back at an eventful year. It included three restaurant openings and also being named ‘One to Watch’ at the Restaurant’s R200 Awards.
Launched in 2000, Marugame Udon has more than 800 fast-casual restaurants in Japan and a further 250 across the rest of Asia, the US and Russia. It’s European debut in the UK was led by restaurant sector veteran Keith Bird through the joint venture between Toridoll Holdings Corporation and Capdesia Group Limited.
The arrival of Marugame Udon in July 2021 in London was received with great excitement during the Tokyo Olympics with 90-minute queues and excellent reviews from acclaimed food critiques, such as Grace Dent from the Guardian.
A second Marugame Udon site followed in October 2021 at The O2 in Greenwich and a third in December 2021 in Canary Wharf.
Looking to 2022, a number of new exciting openings in London are to follow suit, including: St Christopher’s Place (Marylebone), Argyll Street (close to Oxford Circus) and more to come.
